Digital Buildings Council Podcast Series

Meet the Exec Team

In the first episode of its new podcast series, the The Digital Buildings Council (DBC) introduced its Executive Team and their roles, set out its aims, and discussed some of the challenges facing the sector.

The Digital Buildings Council (DBC) formed in 2024 as a not-for-profit industry group to enhance best practice and drive demand for digital buildings. NuXform is a founding member and Kevin Brownell, director of NuXform, is an Executive Officer and Secretary.

Kevin commented, “I have a much over-used phrase that is ‘SMaRT stands for Simply Making A Real Transformation’. That’s where we’re headed and what it should be doing as an outcome. However, it turns out that there’s a lot of complexity in the products and solutions and systems we work together on. It’s not straightforward. And the understanding of how those systems can come together is a challenge, both within the industry and for the people around it. So for me it’s about coming together to move the dial forward on that understanding, have a common thought on what SMaRT can deliver, and communicate it to the outside world.”

Innovation Without Risk

He also put forward his stance on the term ‘innovation without risk’, asserting his viewpoint that any project or design solution being worked on doesn’t introduce risk to a project or anyone else working on it.

“But there’s an understanding that SMaRT can be disruptive. So it could be seen as ‘innovation with risk’. And it shouldn’t be. Because they’re systems that have been tried and tested with solid engineering ethics sit behind them. So it’s a question of how do we convince people that ‘innovation without risk’ is what we’re doing and bring everyone on that journey”
