SMaRT & Electrical Contractors
In our special feature in the November 2024 issue of Electrical Contracting News we introduce the Digital Buildings Council. We also explain SMaRT buildings and how they work, and the opportunity that we believe exists for electrical contractors and facilities managers to add value and get on the front foot.
The successful delivery of SMaRT buildings hinges on early collaboration, not just with fellow designers but across the trades. Electrical contractors are ideally placed to play a wider role beyond the electrical infrastructure of the building. For example, numerous forms of SMaRT sensors make up a typical deployment such as Indoor Air Quality and People Counting, to name just two.
These sensor solutions can be quite large, often forming a project within a project. Just as electrical installation progressed from traditional wiring to ethernet and data cables, the integration of IoT and connected buildings marks the next phase in the evolution of electrical contracting. Over the next 5, 10 - 15 years, we will see the installation of electrical components that can communicate with each other and potentially influence one another, becoming a standard feature in building designs.
As SMaRT buildings evolve, so must the capability of contractors to meet demand. There is huge opportunity for electrical contractors to partner with Master Systems Integrators (MSIs) to provide a joined-up approach across the hardware and software elements of SMaRT building installation and commissioning.
At NuXform, our SMaRT building consultancy helps organisations design and implement these intelligent solutions. We set vision and strategy, procure the right partners and solutions, manage implementation and optimisation. Providing an end-to-end service, or consulting on part of the journey.
